Carpets are one of the first artistic handicrafts which have been woven since ancient times in
Persia . Iranian Carpets have always been famous all over the world. Almost all international tourists buy even a small Iranian carpet during their trips in Iran. The oldest Persian carpet was found in Siberia , and dates back to 500 years B.C.
At the present time it is preserved under good conditions in Hermitage Museum in Russia (St. Peters Burg).
We can see carpet weaving all over Iran . Each part of Iran has its own design and fame. Depends on qualify of carpets; mainly carpets are made of wool, very fine and soft wool and silk.
Iranian carpets are woven patiently by several villagers’ ladies. Many of farmer families, especially during fall and winters seasons weave various semi- sophisticated designs. In fact carpet weaving is an important source of income for them.
All parts of traditional carpets are hand woven, and hand knotted. There are two kinds of knots used for carpet weaving. Turkish knots and traditional Iranian knots which create very fine and delicate expensive carpets. There are hundreds of Iranian motifs for ornamenting carpets.
There are many books written and printed about Iranian carpets. These books can give deeper information about Iranian carpets.
Almost all cities and towns of Isfahan province have their own carpet’s characteristics and design for example Isfahan , Naein and Kashan carpets are among the most Iranian popular carpets.
